KCSB Class of 2019

text by Niko

20 May, 2019

Cheers to the class of 2019! We asked our graduating DJs to reflect on their time here at KCSB-FM and to share some of their favorite memories from around the station. Congrats y’all, we’ll miss ya!

Julia Madden-Fulk

Julia’s show is called “She’s Lost Control!” and highlights female-identifying musicians, switching up the genre or theme each week. Tune in every Saturday from 4-6 pm.

How long have you been with the station, and how did you initially get involved?

I’ve been involved with KCSB for four years, my whole college career! I went through KJUC in winter quarter of my freshman year and got onto FM that spring.

What is your favorite memory from your time at KCSB?

One memorable moment was when I had my first live performance and interview on my show with LA musicians Annabel Lee and Richard E. I was so nervous and had never done an interview, but it was so much fun and they were the nicest guests! Other nice memories include hanging out flyers around IV and painting posters during shakedowns.

What will you miss the most about KCSB?

I’ll miss the great community of programmers! I feel so lucky to have met people from all walks of life and a diverse array of shows. I will also miss all the people who have called into my show over the years. From “Dave from the Grave”, who would call in during my 4 am show my very first quarter on FM to my current regular callers, they are all such an important part of KCSB!

Can you list 5 songs that you feel encompass your show?

This is a reallllly hard one! I’m sure I’m leaving so many amazing people out:

– Mariem Hassan- Haiyu

– Anna Domino- Land of My Dreams

– wished bone- reasons

– Lijadu Sisters- Orere-Elejigbo

– Elizabeth Cotten- Going down the road feeling bad

Will you sub my show? I can provide a playlist.

Haha, sure! No playlist needed 🙂

Carlos Martinez

Carlos’ show is called “Emotions of the Human Mind” and airs every Sunday morning from 10 am to noon.

How long have you been with the station, and how did you initially get involved?

I’ve been with the station since winter 2016 of my freshman year. I got involved because I took a tour of the station during orientation and was immediately drawn to the huge music library. I joined KJUC that winter and started programming in Spring.

What is your favorite memory from your time at KCSB?

My favorite memory from my time at KCSB has been the first time I received a call during my first quarter of programming, at 3 am, and the subsequent awkwardness that followed as I talked with a random listener at like 4 am.

What will you miss the most about KCSB?

I’m honestly gonna miss just being able to play music and talk about it knowing people are listening. My show encompasses a lot of random topics that I get to just go on about, and it’s been amazing to know that listeners have both enjoyed that, and become fans of it.

Can you list 5 songs that you feel encompass your show?

    1. Heaven’s only wishful – MorMor
    2. Broadripple is burning – Margot & The Nuclear So and So’s
    3. Commitment – Luna Luna
    4. Alone Together – Billy Uomo
    5. I can make you love me – British India

Will you sub my show? I can provide a playlist.

Depends on when it is, I’m guessing it’s past since I replied to this so late so sorry about that lol

Paulina Ochoa

Paulina’s show is called Latin Dilation. Tune in on Saturdays from 6-8 pm!

How long have you been with the station, and how did you initially get involved?

Since April 2016, Spring quarter of my 2nd year. I initially got involved because I had always been curious about what went on in the radio station under the tower. I’ve always loved music and finding new things to listen to so I was immediately drawn to it.

What is your favorite memory from your time at KCSB?

One of my favorite memories was in my first quarter on FM, it was over summer and I had the Wednesday 4-6 am time slot. I had woken at around 3:30 am to get ready to go to my show and feeling super tired and not really wanting to go. That day I had a great show, it was a killer playlist I had so much fun playing the music and telling what I can only assume was a very small audience given the early morning hours about the music. It may have been because of my exhaustion or the novelty of the station but that morning was great and that feeling has in part been the reason I’ve stayed on with the station.

What will you miss the most about KCSB?

I will miss being in Studio A, just me and the music. I’ll miss being able to have a platform where I can transmit music that I think is impactful, educational, and important. Not many people get the opportunity to run their own radio show so I feel really lucky to have been able to interact with great people and contribute to this community.

Can you list 5 songs that you feel encompass your show?

  1.  “1977” by Ana Tijoux
  2. “Alma Mestiza” by Rebeca Lane
  3. “Un Gran Regalo” by Nano Stern *Not the live version*
  4. “Donde Nací” by Orishas ft. Silvestre Dangond
  5. “Todo vuelve a su lugar” by Fidel Nadal ft. I-Nesta

Will you sub my show? I can provide a playlist.

Hahah sure, when is it?

Miles Bishop

“The name of the show with which I have most recently been affiliated is The Emil Cioran Society presents… Dilettantish Paroxysmal Embrace, which airs Fridays from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. I am merely a producer, however; I do not host the show. That privilege belongs to the treswonderful Dr. Alain Donadieu”.

How long have you been with the station, and how did you initially get involved?

I’ve been with the station since fall quarter freshman year when I went to a quarterly orientation. I was in KJUC for the rest of that quarter, and then “landed” my first FM show, Music of Abraxas, which I continued through junior year. It was really good and everyone loved it AND me. But, like David Chase with The Sopranos, of which I’ve now watched almost four seasons, I knew when to quit. Unlike David Chase, however, my subsequent project has been even better. Stay tuned for the chilling finale.

What is your favorite memory from your time at KCSB?

My head is a-flood with imagos right now. Could I pick a favorite? Nay, my ego is too dormant for such a task. But I will say that I made some of the best friends of my whole holy life in that Jove-forsaken locus. Storke Tower was aptly named, for it delivered to me in its cryptid wings the suckling babe of consciousness.

What will you miss the most about KCSB?

Since last year I’ve been pretty neurotically avoidant of everyone, so what I will miss most will probably be more related to radio as a creative outlet than to the culture surrounding KCSB. But everyone should know that I’m very appreciative of their work and of the [As I’m typing this, I realize Zine Committee started 14 minutes ago. I said I would try to make it. My life was not enough in order for me to do so. In this moment I feel guilt.] personal relationships they’ve formed with me. I’m just pooped.

Can you list 5 songs that you feel encompass your show?

Not really, but I like the quintalistic magnetism of these five.

Keiji Haino, Jim O’Rourke & Oren Ambarchi – “そしてそれを少し厚くして「あきらめない」にして飲む(Let’s Make It a Bit Thicker and Drink It as ‘N E V E R   G I V E U P’)”

Beverly Glenn-Copeland – “My Old Rag or The Hysterical Virgin”

Léo Ferré – “Night and Day”

LOVE SPREAD – “Myrtle-Wyckoff”

Kurt Schwitters – “Ursonate”

Will you sub my show? I can provide a playlist

Maybe if you sub mine at some point.

Dorothy TangDorothy Tang is currently the External News Director for KCSB and helps run KCSB News which airs on Mondays and Thursdays at 5 pm.

How long have you been with the station, and how did you initially get involved?

I’ve been a news director for one term and I started as a volunteer reporter in 2017.

What is your favorite memory from your time at KCSB?

Probably UCRN 2019! I’m very thankful to have befriended Excomm and get closer (and dick around in Santa Cruz) 🙂

What will you miss the most about KCSB?

I will miss the sense of community I have at KCSB, with Excomm, and with my reporter group. Everyone I have worked with has been so lovely and creative.

What is one of your favorite interviews, stories, etc. from your show?

The interview I am most proud of doing during my term is my 2 part (so far) investigation of Asian American mental health. It’s on the KCSB News Soundcloud!

Will you sub my show? I can provide a playlist.

LMAO yes Niko, when is your show?

Arthur Wilkie

Arthur runs KCSB Sports, which airs on Monday and Wednesday from 5-6:30 pm.

How long have you been with the station, and how did you initially get involved?

I’ve been with the station since my first quarter of freshman year. I’ve always had an interest in doing sports broadcasting but never had the means to do it when I was at home. When I got here and found out that there was an orientation taking place during the Week of Welcome, I knew I had to go. I had originally just wanted to do a radio show on KJUC, but then the Sports Director at the time, Daniel Moebus-Bowles (who now works as a Sports Information Director at UC Riverside), went up and did his spiel and I was sold! I ended up signing up for both, but over the following weeks, I slowly but surely dedicated more time to the sports department. The rest, to borrow a cliche, is history!

What is your favorite memory from your time at KCSB?

My favorite memory occurred just a few weeks after that orientation. I volunteered myself to broadcast games straight out of the gate. I did several soccer and volleyball games (though I had absolutely no idea what anything else was in volleyball aside from a rally and kill) and participated on every Monday, Wednesday, or Friday show that I could. Daniel told us all that he would select two broadcasters that had been the most active throughout the quarter to be assigned the Big West Men’s Soccer Tournament final between UCSB and Cal State Fullerton, but the catch was that they would both have to be OC tested because the game would be on air. As soon as that meeting was over, I started studying up on the training manual and I took and passed, the test a few short days later.

That weekend, a calm Saturday night made way for the final, with Fullerton beating UCSB 1-0 thanks to a goal slipping past Brandon Berke just six minutes past halftime. I remember being devastated after that game- we, being myself and the following year’s Sports Director Matthew Herrera, must have had a twenty-minute post-game ruing all of the chances that the Gauchos had to win the game! The only thing that superseded that feeling at that moment was my newfound anticipation for the following season. I’ll never forget that night.

What will you miss the most about KCSB?

The people. The camaraderie. The late nights. The oftentimes self-imposed deadlines that left us working as quickly as possible to get content up. The fun back-and-forth banter between fans of different teams during meetings. Being able to unapologetically root for anything and everything UCSB. Am I allowed to just say “everything?”

Can you link an example of your favorite interview, story, etc. from your show?

One of the things that I tell everyone that wants to become a part of the sports staff is that I think it’s a remarkable place to learn the ins and outs of sports media because everything is so accessible here. There’s not a whole lot of other media around, so we get to be one of the main sources of coverage for these teams, but we also get to try new things and shouldn’t be afraid to mess up because this is the time to do it. With that, I’ve been so lucky to attain a wealth of experience, so here’s some of my favorite interviews and calls:

        1. The first postgame recap – Big West Men’s Basketball Tournament 2018 in Anaheim. The one that started it all. This postgame recap that we did paved the way to all of the digital content that has become a staple of the department in 2019. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z6GHyPDsZvY
        2. Men’s Soccer vs UCLA: UCSB goes up 3-1: I have to put in what I thought was one of my best calls from this past soccer season. “THE GAUCHOS GO LOCO!” is a nod to the student-run supporters group, the “Gaucho Locos,” who always help create a great atmosphere at Harder Stadium. https://soundcloud.com/kcsbfm/msoc-vs-ucla-22-rodney-michael-goal-from-taieb-and-candia-3-1?in=kcsbfm/sets/kcsb-sports
        3. The Teammate Quiz: Thibault Candia and Faouzi Taieb – One of my favorite things that I worked on during soccer season. Two teammates go head-to-head as we find out how much they actually know about each other. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1T4L6iQG2xk
        4. JD Slajchert interview – I’ve played this one a lot on air, especially when there’s not much else to talk about, because JD is a genuinely good dude. This was a nightmare to edit because I was just learning the ins and outs of Adobe Premiere and it was a two-camera setup, but a lot of fun to do. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFcW_KoT8rQ
        5. En Español: Robinson Idehen – Something not a whole lot of people immediately assume about me? I speak Spanish too! There’s nothing more I love doing than being able to make use of my first language, and I’ve been able to interview several athletes and even do some soccer broadcasts in Spanish. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-qywz09z0Y

Emily Valenzuela

“I currently have a show called “Existential Crisis Hotline”, hah, and it’s Wednesdays from 11 am to 1 pm! My DJ name is chunky dory, and I play lots of different music, but mostly psych rock, post-punk, and synthpop typa stuff”

How long have you been with the station, and how did you initially get involved?

I’ve been hangin’ out at KCSB for almost three years now – I first joined KJUC back in June of 2016. My veeery first exposure to the station was about a year or so earlier when I visited UCSB for the first time during Spring Insight. I was an extremely angsty teen, so when I saw KCSB’s table and found out that UCSB had a radio station, I was hyped. I tried to join KJUC that fall but wasn’t able to fight off the mob of people signing up for intro training, so I waited til summer when things chilled out a lil bit. I haven’t stopped lovin’ it since :’-)

What is your favorite memory from your time at KCSB?

Oof! Definitely a tough question. There’s been lotsa great memories in time here at KCSB – especially during my time on Excomm this year! I think my most memorable tho was when this random dude called into my FIRST show ever on FM. My show was called “My Pet Rock” at the time and was from 2-4 am, or some horrendous time slot like that. I was a lil newb, I was so nervous, really awkward, probably said “um” about 300x/show, but shockingly enough, this guy called in and started telling me how much he loved my show! He really hyped me up and kept thanking me for doing what I was doing and for showcasing the artists that I was. At the end of the call, he was like “Hey, if you ever want some free weed, come hit me up at the Co-Op! I’m the dude with the really long hair who sits out on the front porch.” And thus, my relationship with the KCSB listener base was christened.

PS – I drove by the co-op to see if he was for real and never saw him :-/ If you’re still out there, long-haired indie rock fan, hmu

What will you miss the most about KCSB?

(**disclaimer: this answer is excessively cheesy**) → The people !! KCSB has a really unique ability to unite people from all walks of life. I’ve met and gotten to know people here that I absolutely never would have if it weren’t for this quirky lil radio station, and I wouldn’t trade that for the dang world! Everyone here is incredibly open, friendly, welcoming, interesting, and many other positive adjectives. Not to mention, everyone has really good taste in music, so I’ve been really lucky to broaden my musical horizons by meeting people around the station who are equally as passionate about their musical interests as I am. I really love KCSB’s emphasis on community, and I’ll miss just hanging out at the station with all my radio pals. Aside from providing me a really unique creative outlet, KCSB has really come to feel like a home away from home.

Can you list 5 songs that you feel encompass your show?

Thomas Moran

Thomas’ show “Happy, But On My Way”  airs on Sundays from 4-6 pm.

How long have you been with the station, and how did you initially get involved?

2 years! I knew I wanted to get involved in radio before I went to UCSB, so it was naturally the first organization on campus I started volunteering with. It eventually led to having a show on KJUC and now I’m the Internal Music Director on ExComm. It basically led me to spending a greater part of my life year doing exactly what I love 🙂

What is your favorite memory from your time at KCSB?

Basically, my whole second year at UCSB has been defined by my involvement with the station. But if I had to choose one specific memory, I would say UCRN. It was really cool seeing KZSC in Santa Cruz and getting to know everyone on ExComm more closely.

What will you miss the most about KCSB?

Being able to freely express myself and my interests on-air to complete strangers. Freeform radio is great because you can play and talk about whatever you want and people on the other side just listen. I’m also gonna miss all the friends I made at the station. Everyone is so like minded and easy going. I’m gonna miss working as Music Director as well. Ugh, basically everything 🙁

Can you list 5 songs that you feel encompass your show?

Only five? oof..

  1. Duster – Four Hours
  2. Street Smart Cyclist – Kiss Kitty On The Lips
  3. Ata Kak – Adagya
  4. Makaya McCraven – Butterss’s
  5. Cola Boyy – Beige 70

Will you sub my show? I can provide a playlist.

Of course.
