The AS Senate is a group of elected student representatives which serves as the policy-making body of Associated Students. Every Wednesday at 6:30 PM, the AS Senate convenes to pass bills and resolutions, hear reports from Boards, Committees, and Units (BCUs), and hold public forum. Here’s a quick update from KCSB’s Tatiana Jacquez.

The Senate is back for Fall Quarter, with its first meeting taking place last Wednesday, October 1st at 6:30 PM. See the agenda from last week here. AS President, Le Anh Metzger gave a recap of all her work conducted during the Summer, where she addressed her work on the Kickoff Fair at the beginning of the Quarter, on top of her renovations to AS Main, meetings with Chancellor Assanis regarding basic needs, housing, and student voices being represented here on campus. Additionally, President Metzger met with Senate leadership regarding cuts to library hours, and worked with administration and library staff to get more insight on the issue. She also highlighted work she is planning on conducting during the fall quarter, including an IV Farmers’ Market, renovations to the Pardall Tunnel, Coffee with the President, adding a Student of the Quarter into the legal code, as well as continuing the RateMyLandlord project in Isla Vista. Additionally, President Metzger worked to stock all student housing with Narcan, and is currently working to publicize that project. Senators inquired further about the cuts to library hours after her report back, in which President Metzger stated that UCSB admin had been pushing for a “alternative space” that would function as a 24-hour space. No further information has been given at this time.

Other unit report backs stated:

The Outreach Committee gave their updates on event planning and social media outreach, while citing their regular tabling schedule as a way to connect with the student population. The Executive Director’s Report stated the LinkedIn Learning Program established by former President Nayali Broadway had faced delays when the 6-month contract expired, meaning much of the funding for the program wasn’t utilized as intended. LinkedIn offered to extend the contract until December, which the Senate has yet to consider.
