KCSB Presents of “Day of Action to Defend Public Eduction” Today with Special Live Coverage

Today, KCSB is covering the Day of Action to Defend Public Education. Events are happening at each University of California campus, including UCSB. At 12 noon, KCSB will pre-empt our normally scheduled program, “The Marketplace of Ideas,” to air live the rally and press conference taking place at UCSB’s Arbor, the public plaza in front of the Davidson Library.

We’ll have more coverage during our 5 p.m. newscast. At that time, we’ll present live reports from downtown Santa Barbara where area school teachers and other supporters will march to demand more funding for education in the State of California. Tune in at 12 noon and 5 p.m. for these reports, or listen online.

Prof. Dick Flacks, host of “Culture of Protest” writes: “Woody Guthrie wrote the song ‘This Land Is Your Land’ 70 years ago this week, so we’ll feature it on our next show, listening to many variations. But first we’ll talk with Kelly Burns, one of the organizers of tomorrow’s local demonstration in solidarity with nationwide local events in defense of education, organized by education unions and students.”

A conversation about the films of Errol Morris on The Marketplace of Ideas this Thursday

morris2This week on The Marketplace of Ideas, Colin Marshall talks to cinematic journalist and curator Livia Bloom, editor of Errol Morris: Interviews, a compilation of conversations with the nonfiction filmmaker behind such movies as Gates of Heaven, The Thin Blue Line and The Fog of War. The book, which includes two interviews conducted by Bloom herself as well as other notable film writers like Paul Cronin and Roger Ebert, reveals a directorial mind filled with curiosity, love of truth and real or imagined misanthropy.

KCSB Documentary “Don’t Bank on Amerika” To Air Fridays from 8-9am, Marking 40th Anniversary of I.V. Uprisings

ramparts-may-70Starting Friday, February 26th, from 8-9am, KCSB-FM will begin weekly airings of a documentary series that originally premiered on the station in the mid-1980s, Don’t Bank on Amerika: The History of the Isla Vista Riots of 1970. Written and produced by Malcolm Gault-Williams, Don’t Bank on Amerika tells the comprehensive story of a turbulent and transformative period at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and in its neighboring “college town,” Isla Vista. The series’ inaugural broadcast marks the fortieth anniversary of the torching of I.V.’s Bank of America branch, and will feature a new conversation with Gault-Williams after his original episode.

The bank burning became a symbol of opposition to the Vietnam War, but the spark for such unrest was more complex than any one cause. Don’t Bank on Amerika begins its analysis by recapping the events of 1968 and the takeover of North Hall by black students protesting racism at UCSB. Relying on extensive research (including actualities from the KCSB archives), Don’t Bank on Amerika highlights key incidents that roiled a once-sleepy community (including the forced shutdown of KCSB in April of 1970). A conversation about the North Korean worldview on The Marketplace of Ideas this Thursday

cleanestraceThis week on The Marketplace of Ideas, Colin Marshall talks to Brian Reynolds Myers, contributing editor to the Atlantic and professor of international studies at Dongseo University in Busan, South Korea. In his new book, The Cleanest Race: How North Koreans See Themselves and Why it Matters, Myers examines North Korean propaganda meant for both internal and external consumption and through it constructs the closed country’s view of itself, its relationship to other countries and the Kim dynasty that has controlled it for 60 years. This approach reveals not a Stalinist ideology but one closer to Nazi Germany’s in its prioritization of the military and fixation on racial purity and a threatening outside world.

Tonight (Thursday, Feb. 11): KCSB Airs Live Haiti Benefit Concert from UCSB’s Storke Plaza (9-10pm webcast only, broadcast begins at 10pm)

haiticoncertThis evening from 10pm until midnight (Thursday, February 11th), KCSB 91.9 FM will be broadcasting a benefit concert live from UCSB’s Storke Plaza for victims of the recent earthquake in Haiti. KCSB’s coverage of the event begins at 9pm with a live webstream at kcsb.org.

The night is being sponsored by the following organizations: CALPIRG, the UCSB’s Human Rights Council, Associated Students, and Environmental Affairs Board, and features speakers and five bands, opening with Justin Ratowsky, and followed by (in no particular order) Existential Hero, The Brandy Knights, Sprout, and Fred Paveland, with Isla Vista’s DJ Raph on tap to close out the set.

The first hour (9-10pm) will be confined to an Internet-Only stream (accessible by clicking the link below), but then at 10pm the stream will be aired live over the air on 91.9 FM.

At the event, the organizers will raffle off items and gift cards to raise funds from our community. The proceedings will end with a two minute silent candlelit vigil to honor those who have suffered, lost their lives, and been negatively affected by the earthquake in Haiti.

Organizers hope to raise awareness and money for the cause and get as many people as possible involved. All proceeds from the event will be donated to UCSB’S Center for Black Studies Haiti Relief Initiative Fund. Listeners can donate to the cause online by clicking on the link above.
