KCSB Presents Vagabond Opera & Fishtank Ensemble on Monday, February 22, at SOhO!

santabarbara03On Monday, February 22nd at 8pm, KCSB presents Vagabond Opera and Fishtank Ensemble at SOhO Restaurant and Nightclub.

Vagabond Opera utilizes a fusion of theatrics, comedy, burlesque dancing, and diverse musical styles. Their “punk cabaret” performance highlights that music against between-song dramatic antics. Opening act The Fishtank Ensemble (fresh off a sold-out performance in late January at UCSB) tackles everything from French jazz to Serbian and Transylvanian gypsy anthems powered by violins, musical saw, flamenco gypsy jazz, and bass guitars, trombone, accordion, and one little banjolele.

KCSB Supports A&L’s Presentation of Suzanne Vega “Up Close” Tour on Thursday, Feb. 18th

suzannevega2xo0On Thursday, February 18th, UCSB Arts & Lectures presents Suzanne Vega’s “Up Close” Tour at 8pm in Campbell Hall. Known for her poetic stories in tracks like “Marlene on the Wall,” “Luka,” and “Tom’s Diner,” Suzanne Vega will be performing songs from her most recent recording, “Beauty and Crime,” an album about her hometown of New York City.

Showtime is 8:00 PM. Tickets are now on sale at the Arts & Lectures ticket office or by calling 805.893.3535. For more information, see the A&L website.

UCSB’s MultiCultural Center, KCSB, & A.S. Program Board present dead prez on Thurs., Feb. 25th, 830pm in the UCen Hub

deadprezOn Thursday, February 25th, UCSB’s MultiCultural Center, KCSB 91.9 FM, and Associated Students Program Board present the underground hip-hop duo dead prez, live in concert at the University Center Hub at 8:30pm. Hailing from Tallahassee, Florida, emcees stic.man and M-1 produce music that challenges the status quo to rally against the inequities in American society – promoting such positions as critical pedagogy, anti-capitalism, and veganism — while taking inspiration from the lives and social activism of figures like Malcolm X and the political radicalism of the 1960s. In their song “I’m an African,” the group places itself “somewhere between NWA and Public Enemy.”

Openers are still TBA. This concert is open to all ages, with a beer garden open to attendees 21 and over. Tickets are $5 for students, $10 general admission, and are on sale now at UCSB’s Associated Students Ticket Office or by calling 805.893.2064. This event is co-sponsored by A.S. Finance Board.

KCSB Presents S.B. Film Premiere of “William Kunstler: Disturbing the Universe” with Guest Filmmakers Emily Kunstler & Sarah Kunstler (11/19) + KCSB Interview!

dtu_thumbOn Thurs., Nov. 19th, 7:30pm in UCSB’s Campbell Hall, KCSB presents William Kunstler: Disturbing the Universe, a new documentary about the late radical attorney William Kunstler. The filmmakers Emily Kunstler and Sarah Kunstler will be guests at this Santa Barbara premiere, for an introduction and post-film Q&A.

William Kunstler fought for civil rights with Martin Luther King Jr., defended the “Chicago 8″ anti-war protesters, Attica inmates, and American Indian Movement activists who seized the town of Wounded Knee, S.D. In William Kunstler: Disturbing the Universe, filmmakers Emily Kunstler and Sarah Kunstler create an intimate exploration of their father’s commitment to social justice and his overall legacy.

Emily Kunstler & Sarah Kunstler: An Interview with the Filmmakers

KCSB reporter and film correspondent Harry Lawton interviews the daughters of the late civil rights attorney William Kunstler. On Thursday, Nov 19, 7:30 p.m., at UCSB’s Campbell Hall, KCSB will screen the film “William Kunstler: Disturbing the Universe.” In the film, Emily and Sarah Kunstler explore the life of their father, who fought for civil rights with Martin Luther King, Jr. and represented the Chicago Eight activists, among other controversial clients. In this interview, the Kunstler sisters talk about making the film, their dad, and his legacy.

KCSB & The Santa Barbara Channels Present Journalist Amy Goodman Live on Wednesday, November 18 at UCSB

btsbKCSB-FM and The Santa Barbara Channels present popular journalist Amy Goodman, host of the daily international radio and TV news show Democracy Now!, who will speak about her new book, Breaking the Sound Barrier, on Wednesday, November 18, 630 pm, at UCSB’s Campbell Hall. Amy will be introduced by Denis Moynihan — the book’s editor, DN!’s former outreach director, and current CEO of Free Speech TV.

Tickets are $10 general, $7 students and can be purchased in advance at the Associated Students Ticket Office at the UCSB University Center, by phone at (805) 893-2064, at The Santa Barbara Channels TV facility at 7000 Hollister Ave., or at Campbell Hall just prior to the event. Doors open at 6pm, and the event starts at 630.

Chamber-Pop Band Loch Lomond Visit “The Freak Power Ticket” Monday (11am-Noon), Play Muddy Waters Sunday Night with Generationals

m_1f9977fe717b4ccdb6db0b5d8e1af7d6KCSB programmer Ted Coe writes, “The next edition of my show ‘The Freak Power Ticket’ will be my farthest-reaching in-studio appearance to date, as I’ll be joined by Loch Lomond, a ‘chamber pop’ ensemble from Portland, Oregon. Not too far removed from opening for The Decemberists on tour, they’ll perform live, and we’ll sample their new EP, ‘Night Bats,’ from the indie label Hush Records.”

If you have time, you may also want to check them out tonight (Sunday, November 15th, at 8pm) at Muddy Waters (508 E. Haley St.), with opening act Generationals, from New Orleans, Louisiana. (KCSB is a media supporter of this Club Mercy event.)

KCSB Celebrates Accomplishments of 2009, Reaches Fund-Drive Finish Line, Appeals for Belated Support!

KCSB 91.9 FM, Santa Barbara’s only community radio station (which happens to be based at UCSB), is near the end of its annual fund drive. Running through Friday, November 13th, this fundraiser gives listeners an opportunity to support a vital local resource, to become official members of the KCSB community.

KCSB’s volunteers show up 24/7 to produce a non-stop mix of unique music, independent news, public affairs, cultural arts, and UCSB sports. KCSB is a key information source during wildfires and other public safety emergencies. Last spring, the station was recognized with numerous year-end University awards, including a “Special Award for Extraordinary Service to the Community” from UCSB Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Michael Young.

Supporters can call the station any time up to around midnight on the 13th to donate, at (805) 893.2424, can drop by our studios at a the base of Storke Tower, and can donate online at kcsb.org. A minimum pledge of $25 for students and $50 for non-students entitle donors to a selection of thank-you gifts (including the station’s new KCSB 2009 t-shirt. KCSB has so far raised over $16,500 in donations but needs your support to break the $20,000 threshold! (Update: KCSB’s end-of-drive total is just under $20,000, with more sure to trickle in!)
