THE FREAK POWER TICKET’s Otto von Stroheim TIKI OASIS Interview – Podcast #2 Now Online!

In mid-August, aficionados of mid-Twentieth Century “Polynesian Americana” gathered in San Diego, California, for Tiki Oasis 2014, the world’s largest convention of kitsch Tiki Culture, which has loose, stylistic connections to totem carvings and mythologies of the South Pacific.

On the August 4th and 11th editions of “The Freak Power Ticket,” producer/host Ted Coe discussed the story behind Tiki Oasis with event co-producer Otto von Stroheim, who is also known as the creator of the popular 1990s zine Tiki News.

Their entire conversation touched on the music, dance, cocktails, food, fashion, art, architecture, design, collectibles, literature, culture, and history of the original Tiki phenomenon of the 1950s-1960s, and its playful, punk-inflected revival.

An edited podcast derived from the August 11th program is now available online for streaming or download (below). In it, von Stroheim expounds upon:

  • the preservationist origins of Tiki Oasis and its early connection to Mother’s Day
  • the challenge of maintaining a personal “Tiki palace” while renting in the San Francisco Bay Area
  • and a suggested list of  Tiki-related documentaries and videos for armchair research.

The complete program also featured Tiki, Exotica, and tropical tunes, plus an added musical repertoire of garage and surf rock, Swingin’ Beatnik jazz, lounge, “go-go soul,” Space Age Pop, and more. (The first part of this interview can be found in a previously posted podcast HERE.)

“The Freak Power Ticket” airs on Mondays in the summer from 11am-1pm PDT.
