Remembering Charlie Haden on Culture of Protest (Thursday, July 17)

remembering Charlie Haden

Charlie Haden, the great bassist and musical innovator, died a few days ago at age 76.

Raised in a country music family, Charlie joined Ornette Coleman and other free jazz pioneers in the fifties. Late in the sixties, he founded the Liberation Music Orchestra and recorded a series of albums, with the LMO and with others, that consciously made use of a rich array of ‘protest’ musics.

These efforts were artistic interventions opposing US intervention in Central America and later in Iraq—and as well embracing various musical traditions created by social movements—especially the anti fascist resistance during the Spanish civil war and the civil rights movement in the US.

We’ll devote this week’s broadcast to a sampling of Charlie Haden’s creative works.
