july 4th: culture of progressive patriotism
For July 4th we’ll celebrate the many surprising and various ways that troubadours and poets on the left have contributed to and helped define American patriotism.
To a considerable degree, the patriotic songbook has been created by artists who hoped to fulfill the revolutionary promise of full equality and democracy.
Some of the greatest songs were composed and sung by people who were blacklisted for being ‘Un-American”—not least communists Pete Seeger, Paul Robeson and Woody Guthrie who are nowadays embraced as the ‘great Americans’ they actually were.
We’ll hear their voices and quite a few others, past and current, whose work tries to fulfill and redefine the American revolution.
