ANOTHER EARTH DAY: A Salute to Alejandro Jodorowsky + Frank Herbert’s DUNE on THE FREAK POWER TICKET (Monday, April 28)

On Wednesday, April 30th, 730pm at the Plaza De Oro Theatre (371 South Hitchcock Way), the Santa Barbara International Film Festival and Metropolitan Theatres’ “Showcase Film Series” presents Frank Pavich‘s documentary, Jodorowsky’s Dune, which explores surrealist Chilean-French director Alejandro Jodorowsky‘s unsuccessful attempt to adapt and film Frank Herbert‘s 1965 science-fiction novel Dune in the mid-1970s.

With a production team that at various times included artists H.R. Giger and Jean “Moebius” Giraud, writer/filmmaker/effects specialist Dan O’Bannon, rock groups Pink Floyd, Henry Cow, and Magma, composers Peter Gabriel and Karlheinz Stockhausen, and a cast featuring Orson Welles, Salvador Dali, David Carradine, Gloria Swanson, and Mick Jagger, Pavich suggests that Jodorowsky’s Dune was one of the most influential films never made.

On Monday’s edition of “The Freak Power Ticket,” producer/host Ted Coe will share: • a playlist associated with that roster of talent; • movie trailers; • an interview segment with Jodorowsky-fan Honus Honus (of indie-rock group Man Man); • an array of music inspired by Herbert’s Dune; • and reflections on the impact of that novelistic series, which is culturally and spiritually dynamic, and also linked to the modern environmental movement.
