Guest PHILIP MURPHY on Moroccan Sufi & Popular Music on THE FREAK POWER TICKET Today (Monday, March 24)

Later today (Monday, March 24th), at 11am PDT, Ted Coe, producer/host of the music-and-cultural-arts program “The Freak Power Ticket” will be joined by ethnomusicologist Philip Murphy, a Ph.D. candidate in UCSB’s Department of Music.

When not performing music (in groups ranging from Richmond, Virginia’s Broken Hips to UCSB’s Middle East Ensemble), Murphy has immersed himself in an examination of the influence of the mystical Islamic movement of Sufism on Moroccan music and poetry.

Today’s broadcast will shed light on this research: especially the popularity of the cutting-edge Moroccan artists Nass El Ghiwane, a group that is the focus of a recently-restored 1981 documentary Transes (Trances).

Their work also appeared in the complete soundtrack of Martin Scorsese‘s 1988 film, The Last Temptation of Christ.

“The Freak Power Ticket” airs on Mondays in the winter from 11am-12noon PDT.
