Divas of Liberation on Culture of Protest (Thursday, February 27)

makebaOf his next broadcast, host Dick Flacks writes:

divas of liberation

This week our show is inspired by a new book: How It Feels to be Free: Black Women Entertainers and the Civil Rights Movement by Ruth Feldstein. The book explores the contributions to black liberation activism and consciousness—and to 2nd wave feminism—of a half dozen performers who started out in the 50s. The book’s theme makes a perfect bridge as we come to the end of black history month and the start of women’s history month. We’ll hear the voices of three powerful divas: Nina Simone, Abbey Lincoln and Miriam Makeba who made remarkable cultural and political contributions in performance and in social action. And their work opens windows on the freedom struggle of the sixties and in the process shedding light on matters unknown or unremembered
