Next weekend, The Phenomenauts, a self-described “Rocket Roll” band from Oakland, California (which they dub “Earth’s Capital”), plays three shows in the Tri-Counties area, courtesy of Guardsmen Productions: on Friday, January 3rd, at O’Sullivan’s Pub in Santa Maria (with The Triggers and The Luck); Saturday, January 4th, at Billy O’s in Ventura (also with The Triggers, plus The Loads and The Cigaratz); and Sunday, January 5th, at Manny’s in Paso Robles (with Mother F Bomb and Dead Zed’s Chopper). (All shows are 21+.)
To mark the occasion — and to ring in a “forward-thinking” New Year — Monday’s broadcast of “The Freak Power Ticket” will examine the fascinating association of Rock’n'Roll and Science Fiction, surveying over 60 years of both dystopian and utopian pop-art music in 60 wondrous minutes!
Producer/host Ted Coe writes: “On my next program, I will pay special attention to artists like The Phenomenauts who adopt otherworldly personas: from Bill Haley to David Bowie, Parliament to POLYSICS.
We’ll also shed light on the philosophical origins of the pioneering ‘New Wave’ band Devo (finding new corollaries in the edgy synthpop-ensemble YACHT), while also paying tribute to the real-life ‘rock stars’ of Science Fact, big-thinkers who inspire us to imagine possible futures and to explore the night skies.”
“The Freak Power Ticket” airs on Mondays during KCSB’s fall quarter from 11am-12noon.
