Podcast Now Online: THE SPIRES Live In-Studio on THE FREAK POWER TICKET (Ventura Indie Rock)

On September 30th, KCSB-FM producer/host Ted Coe welcomed Ventura indie-rockers The Spires onto his weekly music-and-cultural arts radio program, “The Freak Power Ticket.”

Founding member/guitarist/lead vocalist Jason Bays was joined by three other players in The Spires’ reconstituted lineup: guitarist Bryan Russell (Massenger, and formerly of Franklin for Short), bassist Seth Pettersen (the dear-departed Franklin’s lead vocalist; plus Seth Pettersen & The Undertow and Massenger), and Brook Dalton (Tall Tales and the Silver Lining).

Formed in 2004 by the husband-wife team of Jason Bays and drummer Colleen Coffey, the duo introduced bassist Catie Kindred with the release of The Spires’ 2009 record, A Way of Seeing. Their lineup has significantly shifted, however, as Coffey is taking an hiatus to attend to motherhood, while Kindred departed for higher learning.

Associated with a lo-fi brand of indie rock and guitar pop, The Spires’ jangly sound has evolved over time, gaining a psych-rock and post-punk complexity allowed for by greater experience and more players. Through it all, Bays’ sophisticated compositions and witty lyricism have been steadily constant. The band’s fourth full-length LP, Eternal Yeah, is out now on Artificial Light Records.

“The Freak Power Ticket” airs on Mondays in the fall from 11am-12noon.
