September 28th would have been the 71st birthday of the late-great Brazilian musician Sebastião Rodrigues “Tim” Maia.
Join DJ Darla Bea for Santa Barbara’s School of Rock tonight, Sunday, Sept. 29th, for a broadcast that explores Brazilian soul music – especially the “Black Rio” movement that Tim Maia helped create — while also paying tribute to Luaka Bop records. Last year, the American music label owned by Yale Evelev and Talking Heads’ David Byrne added Nobody Can Live Forever: The Existential Soul of Tim Maia to its “World Psychedelic Classics” series, which also includes Os Mutantes, Shuggie Otis, and a rare compilation of African psychedelia and funk.
Listen up for a tribute to the “soul superstar with outsize talents and appetites… [who] revolutionized popular music in his native Brazil in the 1970s.” Learn about the eccentricities of this giant of a man, who “married five times, served multiple prison sentences, and at the height of his fame, joined a UFO-obsessed religious cult” (Luaka Bop).
Class Is In Session!
“Rock It Properly” airs on Sundays in the Fall from 8-10pm.
