On Monday morning, February 13th, three-quarters of the Los Angeles rock band Allah-Las, lead guitarist Pedrum Siadatian, singer-guitarist Miles Michaud, and bassist Spencer Dunham, made the drive up to Santa Barbara to share personal stories and their passion for rare vinyl gems on the music-and-cultural arts program, “The Freak Power Ticket.”

Along with tracks by The Southern Sound, The Outsiders, Gene Clark, and The Haunted, these former KXLU-FM programmers also worked selections of their own recordings into the mix during a guest DJ set and interview with host Ted Coe.

Musician and Pres Records Co. owner Nick Waterhouse — a fellow analog artisan — describes his indie label’s kindred, The Allah-Las, with a paraphrase of music critic Greil Marcus’ “Old Weird America.”

The ALLAH-LAS sound like the Old Weird Los Angeles: Strains of true surfing music, American harmonies, Sunset Strip backbeat, desert ramble filtered through Goldstar Sessioneers; That pre-fuzz pedal ‘electrified folk’ music and pop groups hitting that California sound with the tambourine on just the right beat.

The Allah-Las’ live Santa Barbara radio debut anticipates the quartet’s return to the stage at the SOhO Restaurant and Nightclub this coming Friday, February 17th, with Howlin’ Rain, from San Francisco, and SB locals Howlin’ Woods (showtime is 9pm).
