As UCSB Reads celebrates its 6th year, KCSB will be hosting a series of on-air readings of Donovan Hohn’s celebrated book Moby-Duck: The True Story of 28,800 Bath Toys Lost at Sea, and of the Beachcombers, Oceanographers, Environmentalists, and Fools– Including the Author– Who Went in Search of Them.
These special half-hour installments will start at 12 noon daily (pushing back “Democracy Now!” to a 1230pm start time and reducing the following shows’ timeslots by 30 minutes for the duration of the readings).
Moby Duck recounts the odyssey of Donovan Hohn. When the writer
heard of the mysterious loss of thousands of bath toys at sea, he figured he would interview a few oceanographers, talk to a few beachcombers, and read up on Arctic science and geography. But questions can be like ocean currents: wade in too far, and they carry you away. Hohn’s accidental odyssey pulls him into the secretive world of shipping conglomerates, the daring work of Arctic researchers, the lunatic risks of maverick sailors, and the shadowy world of Chinese toy factories.
• generating informed discussion of key issues by promoting the reading and discussion of books on various issues related to the theme;
• encouraging the exchange of ideas among members of the campus and Santa Barbara communities, with community partners that include the Plastic Pollution Coalition, the Santa Barbara Public Library System, Santa Barbara City College, Antioch University, Westmont College, and local high schools;
• to highlight academic strengths across the disciplines that can provide us with a broader understanding of our impact on our world and of the choices we make;
• and to create a sense of commitment, common interest, and camaraderie on campus while addressing important issues.
KCSB’s annual on-air reading seeks to promote the community-wide educational experience provided from the UCSB Reads program. Several discussions, panels, and other events available to the Santa Barbara community will culminate in Donovan Hohn’s appearance in Campbell Hall on Monday, March 5th. The readings will take place on-air every weekday from 12Noon-1230pm.
