On the Monday, January 23rd edition of “The Freak Power Ticket,” host Ted Coe presented an idiosyncratic preview of this year’s incarnation of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.

The first half of the music-and-cultural-arts program featured songs and artists associated with or inspired by Anthony Burgess’s 1962 dystopian novel A Clockwork Orange and director Stanley Kubrick’s 1971 screen adaptation of the same name. For a recap of that playlist, click HERE. A newly-restored version of the film is on the schedule at the SBIFF, and A Clockwork Orange also provided the theme for Thursday’s opening night gala.

Next, the second half of “The Freak Power Ticket” included an interview with director Keith Shapiro, whose new film Rhino Resurrected: The Incredibly Strange Story of the World’s Most Famous Record Store has its world premiere later today, Friday, January 27th, 430pm, at the Lobero Theater, and two other scheduled screenings on Saturday and Sunday. The film explores the story of the Westwood-based indie record-outlet that closed its doors after over thirty years of business in the mid-2000s. That ramshackle store “became a hub of hardcore music misfits, a launching pad for influential music careers, and a groundbreaking and irreverent record label revered by music lovers worldwide.”

An edited archival recording of the Shapiro interview is available below.

“The Freak Power Ticket” airs on Mondays in the winter from 11am-12noon.
