On this week’s Thursday, 11/17 broadcast of “50 Years of People Powered Radio,” KCSB will broadcast sound from our 10/23/11 La Casa de la Raza Cesar E. Chavez Center event, which features a talk by journalists Juan Gonzalez (of Democracy Now! fame) and Joseph Torres (of media reform organization Free Press).
Torres and Gonzalez discuss their latest publication, “News For All the People: The Epic Story of Race and The American Media,” a sweeping account of the class and racial conflicts in American news media, from the first colonial newspaper to the age of the Internet. Further, the book reveals how racial segregation in the media distorted the news and highlights numerous examples of how publishers and broadcasters actually fomented racial violence through their coverage.
Copies of the book are available as FUNd-Drive thank-you gifts!
We will also feature an archival recording of a live KCSB in-studio performance of the alternative-rock group “Skin Yard,” who helped pioneer the Seattle Grunge sound and released a series of influential albums from 1985-1993. Don’t Miss it!
