Mystery Science Theater 3000 Creator Joel Hodgson Interview on The Freak Power Ticket’s Halloween Broadcast

On the Halloween edition of “The Freak Power Ticket” (Monday, October 31st, 11am), host Ted Coe interviews Joel Hodgson, creator of TV’s Peabody Award-winning comedy series Mystery Science Theater 3000, and the touring company Cinematic Titanic. Hodgson’s appearance anticipates the Arts & Lectures-hosted debut of Cinematic Titanic at UCSB’s Campbell Hall on Sunday, Nov. 6th, as the comedy troupe repurposes the movie Doomsday Machine.

The half-hour interview covers a wide array of topics related to American popular culture: inspirations for MST3K in the horror-movie host tradition, children’s programming, and early Woody Allen; UHF television; puppetry; stand-up comedy in the era of cable TV; the Minneapolis art and punk-rock scenes; adaptation of MST3K‘s riffing style to a live theatrical setting; and Hodgson’s connection to Judd Apatow’s Freaks and Geeks. The show will also feature clips and music related to Hodgson and MiSTy fandom.

Finally, to wrap up the broadcast, Coe will feature a short sneak-preview of Neighborhood Public Radio’s “Picnic Revolution,” a free interactive radio-art installation at UCSB’s Storke Plaza on Fri., Nov. 4th from noon-2pm, part of the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum’s Wireless radio-themed art exhibition honoring KCSB’s 50 Years of People-Powered Radio.
