9-11 Tragedies Commemorated on Two-Hour Edition of “Culture of Protest” (Thursday, September 15, 6-8pm)

“Culture of Protest” host Professor Richard Flacks says of tonight’s broadcast: “These days, as Americans remember the events of 2001, few are recalling two other tragic September 11 anniversaries that also reveal much about the nature of social reality.

It’s the 38th anniversary of the military coup that overthrew the democratic Allende government in Chile and ushered in years of torture, repression and exile. It’s the 40th anniversary of the revolt of inmates in Attica prison which ended in the massacre of dozens of prisoners and guards they had held hostage in their effort to negotiate better conditions–a massacre ordered by Gov. Nelson Rockefeller.

On the radio Thursday evening, ‘Culture of Protest’ teams with ‘Latin American Journal’ to remember all of this with songs about 9-11 and Attica and Chile. Plus a special tribute to Carl Oglesby, one of the foremost figures of the new left in the Vietnam era who died yesterday. Carl was a great orator and a remarkable singer songwriter. We’ll hear his voice.”

“Culture of Protest” airs weekly on Thursdays from 6-7pm in the Summer. Tonight’s broadcast is a special expanded edition airing from 6-8pm.
