Victor M. Rios, PhD is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at UC Santa Barbara and the recipient of the 2010 Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research. Dr. Rios drops in on Radio Causeway to discuss is forthcoming book, Punished: Policing the Lives of Black and Latino Boys. The book looks at how criminalization and policing policies for juvenilles affect the lives of everyday urban boys. Dr. Rios grew up in Oakland, CA and joined a gang by the age of 13. He saw his best friend die when he was 15 and eventually redirected his life in aims to help urban youth avoid the pipeline of the criminal justice system. Dr. Rios recieved his PhD from UC Berkeley in Ethnic Studies in 2005.
