This week on Funny Ha Ha, Mr Comedy talks to Professor Dotan Oliar S.J.D. and Professor Christopher Sprigman J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law. The professors have authored a paper entitled There’s No Free Laugh (Anymore): The Emergence of Intellectual Property Norms and the Transformation of Stand-Up Comedy in the Virginia Law Review. We discuss how stand-up comedians protect their jokes through a system of social norms. The conversation includes how comedy has changed over the years and how the social norms have changed the material being performed. Without intellectual property law how has ownership and transfer of right occurred between comedians. Also what forms of retribution a comedian can have if another comedian has stolen his material. We follow up with a discussion of is comedy art. The show examines a fascinating view into the world of comedy from a legal perspective.
