On Wednesday, October 14th, a coalition of faculty, students, staff, and concerned Californians, student groups, campus entities, labor unions, academic departments and centers, and departmental chairs from throughout the state of California will take part in the daylong “Defending the University: A ‘Teach-In’ on the Current Crisis.” The statewide teach-in is a response to California’s recent economic and political failures, which have decimated the budgets of the U.C., C.S.U., and K-12 public and community college education institutions in the state, and California’s civil sector. In addition, major fee increases, layoffs and furloughs are severely impacting the University community.
KCSB will broadcast coverage of the Teach-In live from UCSB’s Campbell Hall, with highlights from nearby breakout session and on-the-spot news reports from 2:30PM and continuing into the night.
The teach-in is intended to generate debate on the issues and to provide a public forum for discussion. Other recorded sessions will also be aired and posted in the wake of this action.
According to official literature describing the event, “The ‘teach-in’ explores the origins and character of the current crisis at the University of California. It is both an educational and political event, designed to provide a progressive, alternative analysis of the budget crisis and a positive road forward for California, the UC system, and education at all levels in our state.”
Among the keynote speakers are George Lakoff, professor of linguistics at UC Berkeley; Stan Glantz, professor of medicine at UC San Francisco and past chair of the UC Committee on Planning and Budget; State Senator Loni Hancock (D-Oakland), who is chair of the Elections, Reapportionment, and Constitutional Amendments Committee; Ruth Gilmore, professor of ethnicity and geography at the University of Southern California; and Lenny Goldberg executive director of the California Tax Reform Association, along with voices from across the spectrum of campus life and beyond.
