KCSB-FM & Its Student Leaders Claim Numerous Year-End Honors at UC Santa Barbara

kcsb-09-award-3_1To cap off an eventful (and at times quite stressful) school-year, KCSB 91.9 FM and three of its student leaders were honored with seven end-of-the-year awards at UC Santa Barbara.

Outgoing KCSB General Manager Erin Fleming was the recipient of a 2009 Leadership & Activities Award for Individual Co-Curricular Activity for the Senior Class, while also being a nominee for the Leslie Griffin Lawson Award for Outstanding Leadership. Those awards are selected by UCSB’s Leadership Development Center, which is affiliated with the Office of Student Life (OSL), Division of Student Affairs. Erin was also chosen by her peers on the KCSB Executive Committee as KCSB’s Member of the Year within our parent organization, Associated Students (AS), for her outstanding contributions to the work of the station and AS. Very shortly, Erin will be headed to New Mexico to begin work with the Teach for America program at a rural location (a significant accomplishment in its own right).

Two sophomore KCSB Executive Committee members were also awarded the 2009 Leadership & Activities Award for Individual Co-Curricular Activity for the Sophomore Class: one was KCSB Associate News Director Jordan Katz, the other Traffic and Training Manager Ariana Dumpis. Jordan will be spending the next school year abroad in Spain, while Ariana was hired to be KCSB’s next Program Director for 2009-2010.

More generally, KCSB was awarded three awards during the past week. On Thursday, May 28th, the station was named Associated Students’ BCC of the Year at the annual AS awards banquet, the top honor for an AS-affiliated student group (BCC equals “Board, Committee, or Commission”). Our coverage of last year’s three major county fires and our live broadcast (and later podcast) of the Dalai Lama’s talks from UCSB were publicly cited as two of the reasons for this honor. Next, KCSB was given the prize for Progressive Use of Technology as part of the OSL Leadership Development Center’s award ceremony on Wednesday, June 3rd.

Finally, on the morning of Thursday, June 4th, KCSB’s professional staff were surprised by Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Michael Young at a Divisional Meeting to be named a recipient of a Special Award for Extraordinary Service to the Community 2008-2009, “for emergency services during the Tea and Jesusita Fires.” This honor was shared with the staff of UCSB’s Recreation Center who housed evacuees during the Jesusita Fire. Dr. Michael Young indicated that this was a special award and that it would not be given routinely. He also cited the work of the many behind-the-scenes volunteers at UCSB who gave back to our community during that difficult time.

A hearty congratulations go out to our three student winners and the entire staff of KCSB (student leaders, volunteers, and career staff) for all of this well-deserved recognition!
