Jesusita Update: Sunday, May 10, 6:45 p.m.

This update includes notes from today’s 5 p.m. news conference, a notice about the fire investigation progress, and phone numbers of utility companies for people needing to reconnect services.

Notes from the 5 p.m. press conference:
–Most of the southern and western perimeters have been contained, meaning a fire break has been established to prevent the fire from progressing. Most of the northern perimeter is still open, as well as a small segment in the Cold Spring basin. There was no expansion of the fire today.
–The Jesusita Fire has burned almost 9,000 acres, and is 55 percent contained as of this evening.
–Motorists are asked to stay off of Foothill Road, although it is re-opened. The road is impacted by evacuees returning to their homes.
–Authorities are also starting to look at erosion control measures that will be needed when the rainy season returns.
–Some fire fighting personnel are being released as the fire comes under containment.
–Containment still expected by Wednesday, May 13.

Notice about the fire investigation:
Fire investigators have confirmed the Jesusita fire origin is adjacent to the Jesusita Trail, commonly accessed from the San Roque or Tunnel Road areas. The fire cause appears related to the use of power tool equipment involved in vegetation clearance. Fire investigators are requesting public assistance with identification of the person or persons engaged in vegetation clearance on Monday, May 4th, and Tuesday, May 5th, 2009. The unidentified persons are known to have been on the trail between 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on both days. Please call the Santa Barbara County Tip Line at 805-686-5061 or contact investigators by email at sbctip@sbcfire.com with information regarding these individuals.
