Jesusita Fire: Thursday Morning Update

The Latest:
Several homes burned overnight in the areas of Tunnel Road, Mission Canyon, Spyglass Ridge. The exact number is not available; estimates are at more than 20 houses. An estimated 500 acres have been burned. Fire-fighting aircraft continue to drop water and retardant (a mixture of mostly water and some chemicals) on the fire zone. Strong winds are expected today and this afternoon. Several schools and roads continue to be closed. There’s an air quality advisory in effect.

Schwarenegger Coming to Santa Barbara
Governor Schwarzenegger has declared Santa Barbara County in a State of Emergency, and will be visiting the county on Thursday, May 7. At 0830 hours (8:30 a.m.) there will be an Operations Briefing followed by a press conference with Governor Schwarzenegger at 0900 (9:00 a.m.).

Three Ventura County Firefighters Injured While Battling Jesusita Fire
At approximately 1500 hours (3:00 p.m.) Wednesday, May 6, three firefighters from Ventura County Fire Department were injured while fighting the Jesusita Fire. All three are members of an engine strike team assigned to protect homes in the Mission Canyon area. … All three firefighters sustained moderate burns and/or smoke inhalation and were initially transported by ground ambulance to nearby Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. Medical staff determined they were in stable condition, and all three were transferred to the Grossman Burn Center at Sherman Oaks Hospital for further evaluation of their injuries.

Santa Barbara County Animal Services and our community partners — including the Santa Barbara Humane Society, ASAP, and Equine Evac — have provided emergency care for more than 300 animals displaced by the Jesusita Fire as of May 6, 2009. It has been a collaborative effort to provide safe care for pets during this traumatic time. Many pet owners have expressed appreciation knowing their animals are safe and secure.

Individuals in our community who would like to support their effort may make donations to the Santa Barbara Humane Society. The following items are particularly needed:
• Pedigree small crunchy bites dry dog food
• Pedigree chunky beef and chicken canned dog food
• Johnny Cat Original cal litter (unscented and non-clumping)
• Whiska’s dry cat food
• Friskies mixed grill canned cat food
