Culture of Protest on “Singing for War”

Professor Dick Flacks, host of “Culture of Protest” (Thursdays, 6pm), writes the following about tonight’s broadcast:

“Ken Burns’ documentary ‘The War’ focuses on how ordinary Americans were affected by and engaged with WWII. The film brings home the incredible suffering of those in combat, and the surprisingly thin cultural support for the sacrifices all were compelled to make. An exception to the generic patriotism during the period was the effort by American leftists to express support for the war effort. To explore such expression we’ll listen to songs created and performed by Woody Guthrie, Josh White, Leadbelly, Paul Robeson and the Almanac Singers. A common thread: the war against fascist racism abroad provides a foundation for ending racism at home.”

All on “Culture of Protest,” Thurs., 10/4, 6-7pm.
