One is Tuesday morning’s Intents & Purposes:

As graduate students in UCSB’s education department, Maaia and Grigsby savor the challenge of putting themselves through a crash course in so many different sorts of specialized information and making it relatable for anyone who tunes in.
“The experience forces you to get a deeper understanding,” Maaia explains. “You need to go back, to engage with the headlines, to think about the related issues. The stereotype of the nerdy academic who doesn’t shower, who can’t talk outside their field — it’s not true. People think of computer scientists that way, for example, but the computer scientists we’ve had on were the most eloquent and passionate about sharing their subject with the world.” Maaia talks about Fresh Air‘s Terry Gross as an inspiration, since she “makes the subject accessible, even when some answers might be over your head.” Grigsby cites Tom Ashbrook, of WBUR’s On Point, as an influence. “We’re sort of On Point meets Morning Becomes Eclectic, since that show also brings to light songs that aren’t widely heard.”

The other is Saturday afternoon’s Kittens vs. Godzilla:

Any Kittens vs. Godzilla listener will recognize the rhythm of this conversation, since all three of the team chat on-air about the music — Borzi at the deejay’s mic, Dadashi and Sloat sharing the couch mic — in the brief moments between tracks. There’s not much time for talk, though, since they’ve got so much to play: Each co-host comes prepared with music, and the show’s playlists are formed live by rotating evenly between each of their selections. This prompts friends listening in to match which host to which track. As all three are housemates sharing an Isla Vista residence with five other girls, those friends who happen to constantly be exposed to their particular musical preferences at home have a definite advantage.

If you have any favorite KCSB programs whose creators are doing creative things on the air, feel free to point Colin toward them at colinjmarshall at gmail.

Though Bujalski’s funny, realistic movies are often considered by critics to be of a similar genius to other independently-produced pictures of the 2000s focusing on the personal relationships of twentysomethings, they possess an intellect and an aesthetic all their own.

The Marketplace of Ideas airs every Thursday at five minutes past noon

If you happen to have missed the last couple editions of KCSBeat, Colin Marshall’s Santa Barbara Independent column on all things KCSB, the day they went up on the front page of Independent.com, never fear: they remain available in the complete KCSBeat archive. First, there’s a continuation of the story of, Poodle Radio, the Indy‘s new live morning show on KCSB:

My goal with live listenability isn’t just to deliver the slightly more exciting experience to you of hearing me and my guests yammer at the very same moment we’re actually yammering. That’s certainly part of it, but my more interesting vision is to cultivate a culture of listener participation. While it’s a pleasure being lent your Poodle Radio-listening ears, it would be even better to get your voices in on the game as well. KCSB’s programs run across the spectrum where this is concerned: Some are one-way transmissions to their audience, and others are two-way interactions with them. We’d like to grow into the latter.

Then, there’s a look at and a listen to Conceptual Radio one of the many unscripted, unpredictable, utterly free-form shows that pop up on KCSB when one DJ subs for another:

The most interesting possible listening experience, to my mind, is when you’re geared up to hear one show but then hear something almost entirely different, a program far away on an axis of radio entertainment you might not have even known existed. The interaction of a specific set of expectations with an unexpected piece of culture that’s completely skewed from them gives rise to some of the richest moments in the modern history of performer-audience exchange. Ponder, for a moment, the potential mind-blowingness of the Nonstop Dixieland Rarities mindset suddenly receiving the Mechanical Drone Hour sensibility. (Neither show is real, though I now wish both were.) This is why I do Conceptual Radio. Conceptual Radio isn’t a show on the KCSB schedule, nor has it ever been. By its very nature, it can’t be: It’s a project that must exist only irregularly, only ephemerally.

The professors have authored a paper entitled There’s No Free Laugh (Anymore): The Emergence of Intellectual Property Norms and the Transformation of Stand-Up Comedy in the Virginia Law Review. We discuss how stand-up comedians protect their jokes through a system of social norms. The conversation includes how comedy has changed over the years and how the social norms have changed the material being performed. Without intellectual property law how has ownership and transfer of right occurred between comedians. Also what forms of retribution a comedian can have if another comedian has stolen his material. We follow up with a discussion of is comedy art. The show examines a fascinating view into the world of comedy from a legal perspective.

Funny Ha Ha airs every Wednesday at 6:00 A.M. and check out the blog at http://www.mrcomedy.tumblr.com
