SANTA BARBARA—On Friday, April 24th, KCSB 91.9 FM, Santa Barbara’s only non-commercial community radio station, will air exclusive live broadcasts of two speeches by the Dalai Lama from the Events Center at the campus of the University of California, Santa Barbara. The 14th Dalai Lama’s public lectures have been sold out for months, but listeners can tune into KCSB 91.9 FM or to KCSB’s live webstream (click here) to hear his lecture, “The Nature of Mind,” from 9:30-11:30am, PDT, and his follow-up talk, “Ethics for Our Time,” from 2-4pm.
UPDATE: Thursday, April 23, 2009: KCSB will be making podcasts of the lectures available online, and rebroadcast information will also be posted at a later date as well.
This visit will mark the Dalai Lama’s fourth appearance in Santa Barbara. The special broadcasts are the result of collaboration between KCSB-FM, UCSB’s Department of Religious Studies, the Buddhist Studies program, and UCSB Arts & Lectures. KCSB General Manager Erin Fleming says, “We at KCSB are very excited to make this historic occasion accessible to a wider audience.”
In anticipation of the event, KCSB 91.9 FM is also participating (for the third year) in the UCSB Reads common reading experience: each weekday at noon through April 23rd, KCSB will air live half-hour readings from the Dalai Lama’s book, “Ethics for a New Millennium.”

About the Dalai Lama: The 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, is both the head of the Tibetan government-in-exile and a spiritual leader revered among Tibetans. With considerable influence over the other sects of Tibetan Buddhism, Tibetans traditionally believe him to be the reincarnation of his predecessors. A noted public speaker worldwide, he is the first Dalai Lama to travel to the West, where he seeks to spread Buddhist teachings and to promote ethics and interfaith harmony. In 1989 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Among other awards, prizes, and honors, an endowed professorship – the XIV Dalai Lama Chair in Tibetan Buddhism and Cultural Studies – was created at UCSB in his honor in 2001. This is his first visit to Santa Barbara since 1991.
About KCSB: KCSB offers a wide range of sounds and perspectives from Santa Barbara and Ventura counties, and gives year-round media training to individuals and groups who would not otherwise have access to radio resources. Both students and non-students learn to work as radio professionals in music, news, sports, arts, and public affairs. The vast majority of its programs are produced locally, but KCSB also runs popular national shows like Democracy Now!, Free Speech Radio News, and Alternative Radio.

Thank you so much for this upcoming broadcast! I was unable to get a tickets for this venue but your broadcast will allow all of my family to listen to HH. Thank you kindly.
Will his talks be recorded and replayed at another time?
Dear Carmen,
It will be recorded, but we’re waiting until after the event to determine whether or not we’ll re-air all or a portion of the talks and when that re-air might occur.
Bryan D. Brown
KCSB Chief Engineer
At first glance, the picture made me think it was a post-mortem tribute.
I behalf of students of Institute of Buddhist Dialectic, Mcleod Ganj, Dharamsala, H.P, India, I want to thank you all the team members and specially to the KCSB manager, staffs and people who make this possible, for providing us this live audio broadcast. Normally we get very very few CDs or DVDs of HH Dalai Lama’s speeches from outside India. This is because of high price tag on these Media, but you people not only providing us free of cost but of course on the spot, so that shows us a new use of modern technology on the bases of human Compassion. Long live the Modern Technology on the bases of Human Compassion.
Thanks to all of KCSB staffs for making this live radio broadcast possible otherwise we would not be heard his message of peace, uplifting, encouragement, and wisdom that he offers to all of the humanity.once again thank you very much and i am very please. i will be listening his wisdom like rest of the people.
Will these broadcasts be downloadable so I can listen to his speech on my ipod? That would be best case scenario… Thank you so much for putting them on air.
We just received word today that we will be able to podcast the Dalai Lama’s talks, and those will be posted fairly quickly after the day’s events… Thanks for your interest!
Thank you so much for making this accessible to everyone to listen to His Holiness. Very kind of you all to do so!
how do we get the English translation?
Cathy,
There is a translator on stage with His Holiness the Dalai Lama who is providing the translation to both the in-house and broadcast audience.
Bryan

Did anyone else see the wonderful note from the students at the Institute of Buddhist Dialectic, Mcleod Ganj, Dharamsala, India? What can we do to help make some of the other presentations by the Dalai Lama made outside of India available to them? Suggestions?
Thank you very much for your webcast. That was very clear. Thanks for your great job.
Lobsang Tsering
Thank you! I’m actually a Cal student (!) but I missed getting tickets for his talk here tomorrow & we don’t seem to be broadcasting it. I very much appreciate hearing his UCSB talks!
Thank you so much for broadcasting His Holiness’ lectures. Made my day!
I missed hearing the talks. I tried to get tickets when they went on sale, but apparently almost all of the tickets were sold before the public sale.
Where and when are the downloadable versions available?
That would be great invaluable gift for us if you (Kcsb team)can make it downloadable. Thanks.
Lobsang
I am looking forward for the rebroadcast of both events.
Being in His presence always energizes and envigorates me. Short of being in His presence, just hearing Him, He is able to instill a sense of peace and calm in me. This is why, many of my fellow Tibetans in Tibet risk their lives and cross the high Himalayan passes into India just to be in His presence just once!
Let me also add my appreciations to KCBS and UC Santa Barbara for making these lectures and podcasts possible.
Thukje Chey (Thank you in Tibetan)
I wasn’t able to be there for the talks yesterday, so I’m very happy to find out that I can listen to the first talk and download it from your web site. Could you tell me if it’s possible to hear and download the second talk too, please? Thank you very much.
Sincerely,
Linda
Thank you so much for broadcasting this wonderful event, although I did not hear the broadcast! I was too far to hear the live event and unable to purchase tickets, as I called a mere two hours after the public sale began and tickets were sold out! This gives real indication of the true impact His Holiness and his speech can have upon the world, and how precious a gift was your choice to broadcast!
I hope that you will be making the talks available for download. So far, I have missed the link or instructions. If such are already available, would you please repeat them? I am eagerly awaiting the incomparable joy experienced at hearing his voice! What a positive healing act you have performed in our difficult time!
Kindest personal regards,
Namkha Wangmo (Powerful Sky Woman)
