ZBS Foundation president Thomas Lopez on The Marketplace of Ideas

lopezThis week on The Marketplace of Ideas, Colin Marshall talks to
Thomas Lopez, audio drama producer and president of the ZBS Foundation. Since the early 1970s, Lopez has penned and produced hundreds of hours of radio fiction with ZBS’ trademark lush sound, wise insight and oddball humor, creating such iconic characters as the bumbling yet adventurous international (and interdimensional) explorer Jack Flanders and Ruby, the hard-bitten galactic gumshoe. ZBS’ latest series, Two-Minute Film Noir, packs full-fledged homages to the classic cops-and-mobsters sensibility, complete with gags and a soundtrack, into 120 or fewer seconds.

The Marketplace of Ideas airs every Thursday at noon.

Electronic Musician Tim Hecker on “The Marketplace of Ideas,” Thursday

heckerThis week on The Marketplace of Ideas, Colin Marshall talks to Montreal-based electronic musician and sound artist Tim Hecker. Hecker’s music explores the intersection between noise, dissonance and melody, and has been variously described as “structured ambient,” “tectonic color plates,” and “cathedral electronic music” and, by theNew York Times as, “foreboding, abstract pieces in which static and sub-bass rumbles open up around slow moving notes and chords, like fissures in the earth waiting to swallow them whole.” He has also worked in contemporary dance, art installation and text. His new album, An Imaginary Country, is newly released from Kranky Records.

The Marketplace of Ideas every Thursday at noon.

Murder by Death’s Adam Turla Interviewed on “The Freak Power Ticket” — Podcast Now Online!

adam-turlaOn Moday, April 13th, “The Freak Power Ticket” (spring quarter from 11am-noon) featured an interview with Adam Turla, singer/guitarist/songwriter for the Bloomington, Indiana-based indie-rock group, Murder by Death.

Murder by Death’s sound has been described as a blend of Americana noir and post-punk. Cello and keys add dramatic punch to narrative songs that surround timeless characters with horror movie motifs and old-west references. Their arrangements mix muscular rockabilly swagger with goth apocalyptic seriousness.

The band’s winter tour featured live recreations of two concept albums, their 2003 release, Who Will Survive, and What Will Be Left of Them?, and its prequel from 2008, Red of Tooth and Claw. “Freak Power Ticket” host Ted Coe and Turla discuss: the cult popularity of the former album, plus its recent follow-up; oil wars, occult folklore, postmodern storytelling, smalltown life in the midwest, and more. The ‘cast is interspersed with an edited sampling of Murder by Death’s music.
