KCSB Sponsors Michael Franti & Spearhead, Fri., Jan. 30th, at the Ventura Theater

michael_franti1On Friday, January 30th, the Majestic Ventura Theater presents Michael Franti and Spearhead live in concert. A San Francisco group on the Anti- Records label, Michael Franti and Spearhead blends soul, funk, hip hop, reggae, rock, and other musical styles with topical lyrics. Also on the bill are Cherine Anderson and Solillaquists of Sound.

Doors open at 7pm. Tickets to this all-ages show are on sale at the Ventura Theater box office at 26 S. Chestnut St. in Ventura, and through all Ticketmaster outlets. For tickets or more information, call (805) 653-0721 or go to venturatheater.net. This event is sponsored by KCSB.

Writer/Talk-Show Host Robert Harrison on Thursday’s “Marketplace of Ideas” Program

harrison3This week on The Marketplace of Ideas, a conversation with Stanford University’s Rosina Pierotti Professor of Italian Literature Robert Harrison, host of the talk show Entitled Opinions on KZSU-FM and author of Gardens: An Essay on the Human Condition.

The Marketplace of Ideas airs every Thursday at noon.

KCSB & Club Mercy Present Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band on Weds., Jan. 28th, at Muddy Waters PLUS Live In-Studio Performance

peyton-smallOn Wednesday, January 28th, KCSB and Club Mercy present Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band live in concert at Muddy Waters Café. A group originating from Indiana and with a recording contract with Side One Dummy, Peyton’s Band will be joined on the bill by 2 rootsy local acts: The Mutineers and Big Jugs.

Friday, January 16, 2009, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.: The Santa Barbara International Film Festival runs Jan 22 to Feb 1 this year, and once again, KCSB will bring our listeners a two-hour preview show. Find out about films and events, about how the films were made, how films and personalities were chosen, and who will tread the red carpet. KCSB film and culture correspondent Harry Lawton will introduce you to directors, student filmmakers, film festival curators, and Festival Director Roger Durling. KCSB 91.9 FM is your source for insightful cultural arts programming.

Avery Gordon and Elizabeth Robinson will be interviewing Ashley Hunt, one of the creators of ‘9 Scripts from a Nation at War’, about the public readings of tribunal transcripts from Guantanamo Bay. They will also be interviewing Prof. Richard Falk, UN Special Rapporteur for Human Rights in Palestine, regarding the Gaza crisis.

KCSB & Club Mercy Present the Return of The Meat Puppets, Thursday, Jan. 15th at SOhO

meat puppetsOn Thursday January 15, Club Mercy and KCSB present the Meat Puppets at SOhO in downtown Santa Barbara. Formed in 1980 in Phoenix, Arizona, the Meat Puppets influenced indie and grunge acts like Pavement and Nirvana. In 2006 founding members Cris and Curt Kirkwood reunited for their first full-length record since the mid-1990s, overcoming a history of personal problems and tragedies.

This 21+ show starts at 9pm with opening acts The Shaky Hands, from Portland, and Santa Barbara’s Cat OK. SOhO Restaurant and Nightclub is at 1221 State St., #205. For tickets or more information call (805) 962-7776 or go to clubmercy.com.
