On Friday, April 25th, and Monday, April 28th, Magic Lantern Films and UCSB’s Arts and Lectures present Julian Schnabel’s acclaimed motion picture, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007), which is the remarkable true story of Jean-Dominique Bauby. A successful and charismatic editor-in-chief of French Elle, Bauby believes he is living his life to its absolute fullest when a sudden stroke leaves him in a life-altered state. While the physical challenges of his fate leave him with little hope for the future, he begins to discover how his life’s passions, his rich memories and his newfound imagination can help him achieve a life without boundaries.
The New York Post promises that “you won’t have a more viscerally emotional experience at the movies this year,” while Variety Magazine calls The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, “A remarkable true story that comes to the screen with an exhilarating disregard for conventional rules.”
The Friday April 25th screenings are at 7PM & 10PM at the Isla Vista Theater (960 Embarcadero Del Norte). The Monday, April 28th screening starts at 7:30PM at UCSB’s Campbell Hall. Student Admission for all screenings is free. For general admission tickets, call (805) 893-3535, go to the A&L website, or purchase them at the A&L Ticket office or at the door. The UCSB screenings of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly are proudly sponsored by KCSB-FM.

“Rose Laundry” by Ventura ArtWalk Spring 2008 Featured Artist Stephen Schafer.
KCSB-FM will host a free concert stage at the Ventura Mini Park (the 300 block of E. Main Street between Palm and Oak) during the City of Ventura’s Spring ArtWalk Weekend 2008, on Saturday, April 26th, from 1-10pm, and Sunday, April 27th, from noon-4pm. The KCSB stage will feature 14 area music acts in genres ranging from funk to electronic, experimental to Brazilian jazz, African to classical, blues to California rock, mariachi to son jarocho. ArtWalk is a free self-guided arts tour at 60+ locations in Ventura’s Downtown Cultural District. The station is also hoping to entice a stop out of UCSB alumni traveling into the area for UCSB’s annual All-Gaucho Reunion Weekend (Thursday, April 24th-Sunday, April 27th).
Rebecca Redman, a UCSB student and KCSB intern on KCSB’s ArtWalk planning committee, says, “KCSB’s officers jumped at the chance to raise awareness in Ventura of our station as a unique resource for the entire region, while our ArtWalk committee set out to book local acts as diverse and lively as our on-air programs. There’s really nothing like KCSB in these parts.” Redman’s folk-pop duo, Watercolor Paintings, featuring brother Joshua (KCSB General Manager), will emcee (with other KCSB staffers) and play brief sets between some of the acts. KCSB’s ArtWalk lineup features the following (with tentative set times):
-
Saturday, April 26th
1-1:40pm: Téka (Brazilian jazz from Santa Barbara)
2-2:40pm: Mariachi Integral de UCSB (traditional mariachi from Santa Barbara)

(Juan Gonzalez and Amy Goodman of “Democracy Now!”)
KCSB-FM and La Casa de la Raza present popular journalist Amy Goodman, host of Democracy Now! – a daily international radio and TV news show – for a lecture, discussion, book signing, and more, on Friday, April 25th at La Casa De La Raza (601 E. Montecito St.). Goodman will speak about the just-released Standing Up to the Madness: Ordinary Heroes in Extraordinary Times (Hyperion), her third book co-written with brother David Goodman, an investigative journalist also appearing at the event.
Standing Up to the Madness explores the stories of everyday Americans fighting to keep democracy as one of the country’s defining values. The authors tell stories of everyday citizens who challenge the government and prevail, changing the way politics is done. People highlighted in the book include African-American residents from New Orleans fighting to regain their post-deluge homes; Connecticut librarians who refused to spy on patrons, challenged the PATRIOT Act, and won; high school students barred from performing a play they wrote on the Iraq War based on soldiers’ letters; and the first U.S. Army officer to refuse orders to deploy to Iraq, charging that his duty as an officer is to refuse to fight an illegal and immoral war. Topics likely to be discussed include the corporate media, a recessionary economy, the U.S. campaign season, and much more.
The night begins at 6:30pm with a UFW-inspired Chicano art exhibition featuring local painter Ray Cirerol, and a reception with David Goodman. At 7:30pm is a screening of the Oscar-nominated documentary short, Sari’s Mother, about an Iraqi mother seeking health care for her dying 10-year old son, against a backdrop of war and occupation. Presentations by the Goodmans will follow, plus a book signing and Q&A session. This UCSB “All-Gaucho Reunion Weekend” event is part of a nation-wide Democracy Now! tour to support community media outlets and other activist or non-profit organizations. The night is being co-sponsored by Chaucer’s Books and The Santa Barbara Independent.

On Thursday, April 24th, KCSB-FM sponsors SOhO Restaurant and Music Club’s presentation of Man Man, live in concert. Switching off on instruments from the Rhodes keys to strings, brass to marimba; beneath vocals sputtering from gasoline-soaked swampy barroom crooning to wildly harmonious falsettos, Man Man will perform in their raucous wild-eyed, facial hair-sporting, Man Man fashion live at Soho in downtown Santa Barbara, a stop on their tour supporting the band’s new Anti- Records album, Rabbit Habbits. Also performing are special guests Yeasayer. The show begins at 9pm, but sorry youngsters, legal booze-guzzling age and over only. SOhO is at 1221 State St., #205 in downtown Santa Barbara. For tickets or more info, go to the venue, to SOhO website, or call 805-962-7776.
On Wednesday, April 23, KCSB-FM sponsors Nederlander Concerts’ presentation of the English rock band, Spiritualized, which bring their Acoustic Mainlines tour to the Lobero Theatre in Santa Barbara. This is one of the smallest theatres that the band will play this year. The tour will feature the music of Spiritualized, Spaceman 3 and others, and a string section and gospel singers will also accompany the band. Spiritualized will release a new 18-track album, Songs in A&E in the UK on May 19th, and is also slated to perform at the 2008 Coachella Music & Art Festival.
Formed from the ashes of trance-rockers Spaceman 3, singer/guitarist Jason Pierce’s group Spiritualized has not broken away from his prior band’s trademark hypnotic minimalism. Drawing on the continued influence of the Velvet Underground, La Monte Young and Steve Reich, Spiritualized stake out a common ground between minimalism and lush symphonics.
This is an all-ages event. The Lobero Theatre is at 33 East Canon Perdido in Santa Barbara. Showtime is 9pm. Tickets are on sale now: available online, at the UCSB Associated Students Ticket Office (805.893.2064), and at the Lobero Theatre Box Office.
This Monday morning, April 21, 2008, from 9-10am PT, “The Freak Power Ticket” will air an interview conducted this past Sunday (4/20) by host Ted Coe with Spiritualized frontman Jason Pierce (aka “J. Spaceman”). KCSB will also be giving away Spiritualized passes to listeners. So be sure to tune into to hear the interview & for your chance at Acoustic Mainlines passes to the Lobero Theater!
