Week of the Immigrant Calendar

Sunday, April 29:
12pm-4pm - Dia Del Niño or Day of the Child Celebration for families and children at the SB County Courthouse Sunken Gardens.

Monday, April 30:
6pm-8pm - Citizenship Drive Orientation at La Casa de la Raza.

Tuesday, May 1 (UCSB):
12pm - Solidarity March at Pardall Tunnel (Isla Vista entrance to UCSB Campus)

Tuesday, May 1 (SBCC):
1pm - Student Solidarity at SBCC will have workshops
2pm - Rally and march at Caldon Point on SBCC’s West Campus

Tuesday, May 1 (Santa Barbara):
5:30pm - Procession for Dignity and Hope for the Immigrant at Alameda Park. The Procession begins at 6pm, and will move to the Sunken Gardens, where Santa Barbara community members will honor the contributions of immigrant workers.

KCSB Presents: Critical Issues in Media, Friday, April 27th, 4pm & Other Alumni Reunion Weekend Events

As part of our 45th Anniversary Alumni Reunion, KCSB presents a Critical Issues and Careers in Media Panel, on Friday, April 27th, at 4pm in the Graduate Student Association Lounge (above the Multicultural Center) on the UCSB campus. KCSB has invited some of our alums who are currently working in a variety of media to discuss their careers and how current events are impacting media. This is a free event. Panelists will include:

Monica Lopez: Features Producer of national radio program Free Speech Radio News.
Alistair Jeffs: DIRECTV Producer.
Monty Luke: XLR8R Magazine columnist, DJ, music producer, & event promoter.
Jon Kim: Sound in Color Record Label, Turntable Los Angeles Store Manager.
Tim Owens: Executive Producer of NPR Jazz, former Director of Programming for NPR news and classical music formatted WETA-FM in Washington, D.C.
Rick Kendall: Former Director of Market Research & Planning for HBO & Vice President of Cinemax, now works with Internet based companies.

KCSB Presents Bestselling Author Jeremy Scahill on “Blackwater” Mercenaries on Thurs., April 26, 7pm @ IV Theater

Jeremy ScahillInvestigative journalist Jeremy Scahill, of The Nation magazine and a correspondent/producer for Democracy Now!, will discuss his explosive new bestselling book, Blackwater: The Rise of the World’s Most Powerful Mercenary Army, an exposé of Blackwater USA, the Bush administration’s shadow soldiers in Iraq, Afghanistan, and inside the U.S. (in places like post-Katrina New Orleans). KCSB is very proud to be hosting Scahill’s first West Coast appearance on this important topic, on Thursday, April 26th, 2007, starting at 7pm, at the Isla Vista Theater (960 Embarcadero Del Norte). A Q&A will follow Mr. Scahill’s lecture.

jsparking.pngProceeds from this event will benefit KCSB. Tickets are $5 for students and $8 for general admission; tickets are on sale now at the A.S. ticket office at UCSB, available by phone at (805) 893-2064, and at the door. We hope to see you there!

There is limited free parking available in Isla Vista. Campus parking permits will also be available at the entrance of the Lot 22 parking structure for the discounted price of $1.50. Full campus map can be found here.

Mr. Scahill will be a guest on “No Alibis” this Weds., April 25th starting at about 9:15 am. The first hour of the program (from 8-9:00 am) will feature a discussion of “Week of the Immigrant” issues and activities.

KCSB On-Air Reading of “Field Notes from a Catastrophe” for ‘UCSB Reads,’ April 2nd-19th

As part of the UCSB program UCSB Reads for Earth Day, KCSB will have programmers and various other guests read the featured book for the program Field Notes from a Catastrophe, by Elizabeth Kolbert, live on air from 12pm until 12:30 each weekday from April 2nd through April 19th (the date when Kolbert will give a lecture in Campbell Hall).
